What “Old Town stay” actually means
The Old Town is a grid around Długi Targ, Mariacka, the Motława and Granary Island — not one square. Listings labelled “Old Town” may also mean Długie Ogrody or a tram ride away. Check the map: 800 m on foot from Neptune is a different weekend than “15 minutes by transit”.
For evenings without taxis, aim between the Golden Gate, the Crane and Mariacka / Chlebnicka — or quieter side streets next door.
Noise, floor and street side
Długi Targ and club streets run late on Fridays and Saturdays. If you are noise-sensitive, ask for a courtyard flat, higher floor or side street. Building acoustics vary — honest host notes beat marketing copy.
An apartment lets you close a bedroom door; a street-facing hotel room can be just as loud and smaller.
Parking and airport transfer
The historic core is paid parking; spaces vanish at night. Driving? Look for a garage space or honest on-street info. Without a car: airport bus/taxi to the centre, then walk everywhere.
Gdańsk Główny station sits on the edge — 15–25 minutes’ walk to Długi Targ. Handy if you arrive by train.
Checklist before you book
Check: exact map pin, floor and lift, check-in method, cleaning fee, guest limit, pets, cot, cancellation rules.
Compare 2–3 addresses in the same radius — not only the nightly rate. Booking direct with a local host usually means clearer rules and faster answers than a big platform.
Apartment or hotel in the Old Town?
For a tourist weekend — usually an apartment: more space, a kitchen, often better value in a townhouse. Hotel if you want reception and breakfast for a single night.
Can you sleep well on Długi Targ?
Yes with a courtyard or side-street flat. Windows onto the main strip can be loud on weekends — ask before booking.
How close should the stay be to the sights?
Ideally within 15 minutes’ walk of Długi Targ or the Motława. Beyond 25–30 minutes on foot it stops feeling like an Old Town base.
